Playing Together Project’s mission is to center African American Jews and to unite African/African American and/or Jewish American San Diegans through a shared love of film, food, art, and music. By bridging cultures, we aim to solidify a foundation of trust and understanding amongst the next generation of movers and shakers in San Diego and beyond.
Our educational purpose highlights our focii:
- educating future generations about African American Jews by giving space for African American Jews to tell their stories in their own words
- educating the Black and Jewish communities about the historic Black-Jewish alliance and reviving it to better fight antisemitism and racism
- educating by bringing programming and presentations to local synagogues, churches, rabbis, Black ministers, congregations, Black and Jewish organizations
Book Your Event
Our founder, Barrett, is herself an African American Jewish woman and deeply knowledgeable about the Black~Jewish alliance that carried through the 20th century, ended formal segregation and fought for civil rights. Educated globally and also an educator herself, she brings to groups and organizations knowledge, insight and inspiration and motivation. She knows that the next step in effectively defeating antisemitism and racism is EDUCATION. That education is directed at Black and Jewish communities (especially youth and young adults), that they learn the truth about their shared legacies, revive the alliance and move forward together to defeat a common enemy – those who hate Africans/Blacks and Israelis/Jews.

Through film, lecture, Q&A discussion, and exercises, we will equip your members, employees, and students with knowledge about the alliance that will inform them and ignite them to begin building a present and future alliance.
